R&D Section

The Research and Development (R&D) Section focuses on improving the current knowledge the team has on the processes involved in Forging and Foundry work. It is divided into the Foundry and Forging R&D teams to account for the separate knowledge understood by either group! As an example of the research conducted, one member of the R&D Foundry Section is currently investigating how degassing the aluminum affects the condition of the final cast poured! It’s predicted that the porosity of the final product will decrease as a result of the gas escaping!

  • Forging R&D

    The R&D Forging team has developed procedures for Experiment Plans which aim to formally document the process and results of advanced forging techniques. The team’s current areas of research include Hamon lines, acid etching and Damascus steel.

    In the future, the team hopes to explore the use of a power hammer in the workshop as well as create CAD renders and technical drawings of our projects.

  • Foundry R&D

    The R&D Foundry team has been working on techniques we can incorporate into the workshop to not only improve the finish of the casted product, but to also cast different metals.

    Some of these current projects include casting with tin instead of aluminum, hydrogen degassing (which is intended to reduce the pores that cover the surface of the finished cast) and alternatives to casting with metal.
